Pune FC winger James Meyer returned to playing ways in style. Having missed two matches, James produced the star act with a 22-yard strike to leave Bengaluru FC stunned in Round-9 of the ongoing I-League 2013-14 season.
James’ strike was his third since joining the club, the second in a home game and importantly took him to the top of Pune FC’s scorers list. With injury turning out to be a frustration, the goal added up to motivation.
In a freewheeling talk with punefc.com, James spoke on the moment and shared his thoughts.
Excerpts;
Q: Comeback after missing two matches… Relieved?
Of course relieved! I hate not playing, I get quite grumpy. My ankle wasn’t 100 percent. I just went on to have an impact. I didn’t plan on scoring, but that’s how it happened so I guess we were fortunate in that way.
Q: Going in as a substitute, what did Coach Snoei tell you? And after you came out what did he say?
Coach had spoken to me earlier that day. He told me what he wanted from me, so that was my goal as I stepped on to the field. It turned out well. He was pleased but I think as much with how the whole team played and the result as with me personally.
Q: You worked your space and scored. What exactly was going on in your mind since you were on field for about six-odd minutes?
As I received the ball I looked up for a passing option, but had nothing on so I took the space in front of me and things just opened up for a shot. The amount of time I had been on the field was irrelevant.
Q: While out of the team, how did you work on your injury to get into shape as soon as possible?
Just doing the right things and following the physios’ advice; being diligent with exercises, icing, and rest.
Q: Top-scorer now… If you replay the moment (v/s Bengaluru FC) would you be able to repeat. How do analyse the goal scored.
It is nice to look back at the goals and moments from matches sometimes, but honestly I try not to. I prefer to look at my performance as a whole, and improve on that. As for the goal, I’m sure I could do something similar.
Q: Has your Indian sojourn begin as expected?
Well not exactly, I certainly didn’t expect to have gotten injured; having said that it’s going quite well.
