Salgaocar Football Club registered a fluent 4-1 victory over Sesa Football Academy in the Airtel Super League match at Duler stadium here on Thursday.
Defender Fullgencio Cardozo netted a fine brace for Salgaocar while captain Marcus Mascarenhas and substitute Brian Mascarenhas added their names in the scoresheet.
Perryson Rebello came off the bench to pull one back for Sesa.
The win enabled Salgaocar stay 4th in the league standings with 21 points while Sesa remain on 5th with 13 points.
The green brigade showed their superiority right from the onset while the young boys of Sesa took time to find their footing.
Salgaocar opened the scoring in the 10th minute itself whne Sesa keeper Kiran Krishnan, who started in place of Thockchom Singh, fumbled a routine collection from Rayman Fernandes flag kick and Fullgencio Cardozo pounced at the opportunity to give his side the lead.
It was the wakeup call Sesa required as thereafter they started playing with a sense of urgency and managed decent spells of ball possession. They almost netted a fortuitous equaliser in the bargain when Agnelo Colaco’s intended cross hit the crossbar.
Salgaocar regained their composure and nearly extended their lead when Fullgencio was at the receiving end of Randeep Singh’s set piece delivery but Kiran was alert to tip his goal-bound header over the crossbar.
However minutes after being denied Fullgencio’s persistence saw him complete his brace and also double the lead for Salgaocar. A short corner played between Karma Tsewang and Randeep saw the latter send in an inviting cross to the far post and Fullgencio was at hand to head home.
The green brigade dominated thereafter but Sesa almost reduced the deficit against the run of play when they caught Salgaocar defence napping. Yogesh Kadam chipped the ball over the advancing keeper from the edge of the box but Lenny Pereira was at the right place at the right time to make the goalline clearance.
At the other end captain Marcus Mascarenhas made amends for an earlier miss when he powered home a header from Clifton Dias’ pinpoint cross seconds before the half time whistle. Salgaocar took a confident 3-0 lead as they went into the breather.
The second session was a fiery encounter as the momentum swung in Sesa’s favour. Sesa’s second half display was in total contrast to the first as they played with a purpose and tried to force a comeback.
On the other hand, Salgaocar’s attack in the second session looked toothless and that forced coach Derrick Pereira to introduced Bali Gagandeep in an attempt to add some muscle into the attack.
Sesa however threatened a comeback when substitute Perryson Rebello, who had wasted a glorious opportunity earlier, curled the ball into the far post to finish off a well-constructed goal.
It was a brave and promising performance from the Academy boys but Salgaocar substitute Brian Mascarenhas quelled any doubts of a comeback in the 90th minute when his speculative effort from distance caught Sesa custodian Kiran on the wrong foot and nestled in the nets.
Fullgencio Cardozo was adjudged the Man of the Match while Perryson collected the honours for Goal of the Match
