In a physical battle, Sporting Clube de Goa was held to a 1-1 draw by Mumbai FC in the Airtel I-League at PJN stadium, Fatorda, on Saturday.
Sporting Goa led through a Boima Jerry Karpeh penalty at half time.In the opening exchanges, Sporting Clube de Goa’s Boima Jerry Karpeh was fouled on route to goal, but the referee decided to award a free kick on the edge of the box instead. From the resulting free kick, Sporting Goa’s Rowlin Borges hit the cross bar.In the eighteenth minute, Sporting Goa’s Jerry was fouled inside the box and this time the referee pointed straight to the penalty spot. Jerry stepped up and scored his 23rd goal of the season in on all competitions.
After the goal, Sporting Goa exerted their superiority and defender Gonzalo Hinojal came very close as he hit the post and minutes later Beevan D’Mello’s stiff grounder went marginally wide of the target.Changing over, Mumbai came out strongly and were determined to get back in to the game. Mumbai’s Climax Lawrence tested the Sporting Goa custodian Melroy Fernandes, but he pulled off a fine save to deny him.
In the 53rd minute, Mumbai finally pulled level after Yusif Yakubu bundled the ball into the back of the net from a corner.In the closing stages, Sporting Goa nearly sealed victory, but Martins Ekwueme was denied by the Mumbai custodian and from the rebound Ogba Kalu was also prevented.
Mumbai’s Yusif Yakubu was adjudged the man of the match and received his award from former deputy general secretary and director of FIFA, Jerome Champagne.
