Celebrations broke out in the beautiful Goan village of Nuvem, before spreading to the rest of Goa as Sporting Clube de Goa overcame Rangdajied United 2-1 in the Aiff’s I-League on Wednesday. Sporting Goa led 1-0 at the interval.
Goals from Rowllin Borges and Cajetan Fernandes, who both hail from Nuvem, was enough to give Sporting Goa their first victory after seven I-League matches and more importantly 3 valuable points.
This game could have been a tale of the two Martins, with Rangdajied’s prolific Nigerian striker Ranti Martins keeping up his fantastic goal scoring record for his new club, by netting in the 90th minute. While Sporting Goa decided to rest Nigerian midfielder Martins Eqwueme and kept faith with their young Goan youngsters.
The Flaming Oranje raced into the lead in the 27th minute, when Rowllin react quickly to lob the ball over the Rangdajied custodian, after the later had ventured way off his goal line to make a half clearance.
Changing over, it did not take Sporting Goa long to double their lead when Cajetan Fernandes curled in a sublime freekick from just outside the box, which rattled the woodwork for good effect on its way into back of the net.
Playing in front of a home crowd, Rangdajied never gave up the chase and got themselves a consolation in the last minute through Ranti Martins who has now netted six goals in six games
.
With this victory, Sporting Goa has moved up to third place with 32 points from twenty one games, while Rangdajied stay in eighth position, with 24 points from twenty two outings.
“It was great team work from the whole squad, which saw us through today. We hope to carry on the same momentum into the remaining matches,” stated Sporting Goa Coach Oscar Bruzon.
