What was supposed to be a normal league game in Russia, took a gruesome and macabre turn of events. Zenit St. Petersberg, who are currently second place in the Russian Premier League, were losing 4-2 at home against Dynamo Moscow when fans invaded the pitch and violence erupted on the field.
According to reports, the captain of Dynamo Moscow, Vladimir Granat was punched in the head twice. Fortunately other players remain unharmed. The skipper of Dynamo suffered concussion. The match was then abandoned.
Such shocking events are not alien to the Zenit stadium. Two years ago, in the same fixture, a Zenit fan threw a flare at a Dynamo player. Similar events have also transpired in other matches; incidents of racism and violence have been rampant. What is deeply troubling is that despite the occurrence of similar incidents in the past, the club has failed to inoculate any sort of mechanism to prevent their recurrence.
The club is now facing sanctions and a possible 3-0 automatic loss which would hinder its title winning chances.
