Goalkeeper Tzorvas arrives to join NorthEast United FC

Greece’s former international goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas landed in Mumbai this evening en route to joining the NorthEast United FC team at their training camp in Guwahati.
Greece’s former international goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas landed in Mumbai this evening en route to joining the NorthEast United FC team at their training camp in Guwahati.
Tzorvas was the first choice goalkeeper for his country in the 2010 FIFA World Cup and later during the 2012 UEFA European championship. He will now play a key role for NorthEast United FC in the Hero Indian Super League which begins next month.
When asked about his thoughts on playing in the ISL, Tzorvas said, “I am excited to be playing for the NorthEast United FC and look forward to a good season on a new turf with my new teammates. Also, I hear that football as a game has a huge fan following, especially in the North East and look forward to a new learning under the guidance of coach Ricki Herbert. I am sure we will all work together and bring success for the club. Moreover, I would like to thank all the people at the club for giving me this opportunity. Lastly, I am proud to be the first Greek player to play in India and hope I am not the last.”
Expressing his happiness on the arrival of Tzorvas, Herbert said, “It is with great excitement that NorthEast United has secured the services of Tzorvas to the player squad. Tzorvas will bring a wealth of experience and confidence to the NorthEast United environment, thus enhancing the very strong philosophy of the football club in creating an exciting and enthusiastic brand with a very youthful component. His World Cup experience in 2010 and the volume of international appearances he has made can only be of a strong and positive benefit to the franchise.”
The club’s two young Indian goalkeepers, 21-year-old Rehenesh TP and 20-year-old Kunzung Bhutia, will be fortunate to have someone like Tzorvas to learn from. Herbert added, “The opportunity for the two Indian goalkeepers to work alongside him will certainly offer them both a great deal of development. I look forward to his arrival and the chance to work with him during the inaugural season of ISL.”
When asked about whether he would explore India post the ISL, Tzorvas replied, “I love communicating and understanding the culture of the country, so if time does permit me from my club commitments, I would surely like to take my wife to the Taj Mahal.”
