In what was expected to be a thrilling game of football, Garhwal FC proved their worth to be in the 2nd Division of the I-League 2013-14 by beating Green Valley SC in a well deserved fashion. It was a big fixture considering the stage.
In a game where any team that won the match would go top of the table, Garhwal FC took the game by the scruff of the neck and played at a high tempo from the start. The introduction of Rahul Kaintura, after his injection of inspiration in the last game against PIFA Colaba brought instant reward when he started this game and opened the scoring for the Garhwal in the 42nd minute after a very well worked move in the final third.
The 2nd goal for the Garhwal came from a superb free-kick taken by the Delhi captain Monu Chowdhary who arrowed the ball in the top corner of the net leaving the keeper no option but to see the ball flying past him in the 84th minute.
The work ethic shown by the team to keep Green Valley SC at bay finally paid off when Kamal Rawat’s shot saved by the keeper fell to the hovering Mahinder Singh who made no mistake to put the ball past the helpless goalie lying on the floor after a good save.
The game also saw the introduction of Noel Darjee, a boy from the Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools making his debut at the age of seventeen.
Garhwal FC are on six points after three games in-spite of the bad loss they suffered against Royal Wahingdoh in their opening fixture. GFC will be playing Kalighat Milan Sangha Football Club on 15/02/2014.
