Ten men Sporting Clube de Goa was held by Churchill Brothers to a 1-1 draw in the Aiff’s U-19 I-League (Goa zone) at Don Bosco ground, Panjim on Monday. The match was goalless at the interval.
Churchill came close in the 13th minute when Elton Godinho was played through on goal with a beautiful through ball from midfield, but he was guilty of being wasteful and fired the ball way over the cross bar.
Sporting Goa did not test the rival custodian until the 28th minute, when Captain Charles Cardosa’s bullet header flashed fractionally wide of the post.
At half time, Sporting Goa’s mercurial striker Mauvin Borges was brought on and his electrifying touches set the tone for the second session.
Eight minutes after the restart, Churchill Brothers failed to clear their lines, with the ball whizzing about like a pin ball machine.
The ball finally fell to Sporting Goa’s defender Roshan Singh who marked his return from suspension with a fierce low drive into the back of the nylons, to give his side the lead.
The Flaming Oranje started to move with increased grit and determination, with Mauvin riding several challenges to display his class.
It was only twelve minutes before the end that Churchill Brothers managed to alter the course of the game, when Captain Elvis Barretto rifled in a free kick from the edge of the box to equalize for Churchill.
With this result, Sporting Goa moves to 10 points from six games, while Churchill Brothers are on 2 points after the same number of games.
