The Premier League season is coming to an end,and the beleaguered defending champions dreadful season is finally coming to a close.Manchester united are now associated with many players,as moyes looks to make a massive overhaul to the ageing team, which lie at 7th position, with a game in hand over 6th place Tottenham Hotspurs. They are outside the Champions League Spots for the first time since the Premier League Began in 1991.
Manchester United's midfield has been the area of concern, and has never looked really world class, even since before legendary Sir Alex Ferguson retired. It was expected that Ferguson would buy someone to strengthen the midfield, but instead he called up Paul Scholes out of retirement. This season after Scholes retired, the midfield looks even weaker. With Fletcher injured,Moyes tried to make marquee signings like Cesc Fabregas but instead ended up purchasing Fellani from his former club, which proved to be a panic buy.He has not yet fulfilled the expectation aqnd thus that is the reason for united to pursue young Portuguese defensive midfielder William Carvalho
Fellaini, a player bought from Moyes' former club Everton, to solve the midfield crisis, has failed to prove himself worthy of a start this season |
Carvalho:A Preview
Mufc have visibly shown interest on this young prodigy from Sporting Lisbon. At 21 years he is very young, and still has a lot of room to develop, but is already a backbone at the Portuguese club.At just over 6 feet, and well built,he measures perfectly as a defensive midfielder. He can physically dominate players, and has the potential to become a world class player,a lot similar to Yaya Toure.
A very good defensive player:
Carvalho uses his physicality impressively to make tackles, and puts pressure on the opposing team's strikers to lose the ball.
Skilled in the art of ball winning:
His anticipation skills are impressive, thus allowing him to read the game well and position himself properly and recover lost balls and intercept many passes and crosses in the team's own half.He has a good touch, and a decent burst of pace, and can distribute the ball well,a job that Carrick and Cleverley have failed to do properly.
Imposing presence in set-pieces:
Carvalho plays a major role and can often offer goals during corners or freekicks,as he is a good header of the ball and also has got a decent shooting ability.
An attacking position too:
He can also provide an attacking option and often play vertical passes to the more creative players, but often attempts complex long balls through balls to create chances.
Weaknesses:
He is not the fastest of players and is not a technically gifted player like Pirlo,Or Xavier Hernandez, but he makes up for these with his physical presence.
His physical presence often makes the opposition vulnerable to being fouled, and thus might give away costly freekicks,in dangerous areas. However this problem often gets solved as the player grows more mature and experienced.
Final Verdict:A Priority:
Carvalho is a very good talent, who under the right manager can shine and become a world class player. It is thus very necessary for united to buy a player of his calibre and quality.Though his worth may easily sky rocket within a matter of years,he is not exactly worth 37 million right now.It could prove to be a gamble to united and it is right for them bargain and get him around a price of 23-27 million.
