FIFA World Cup 2014:Algeria Create History!

Algeria hold Russia to reach last 16 of FIFA World Cup 2014 Brazil

60th minute header from striker Islam Slimani was enough for Algeria to reach last 16 of FIFA World cup for the first time in the History.

Russia had a dazzling start into the match  and Alexander Kokorin found the net from a header as early as 6 minutes into the group H match held at Arena da Baixada,Curitiba.

The Algerians started to intense  their attack as the match progressed and started to build fine attacks into the Russian goal mouth.Oleg Shatov's 25 yard shot in the 23rd minutes was brilliant piece of work by him and was not that far from the target.

The desert warriors continued their charge toward Russian half and they were the much superior team in the dying minutes of first half. They had a clear cut chance on the stroke of first half when a Brahimi's beautiful corner gave Slimani a free header but his effort went straight into the arms Russian keeper.

Early minutes of second half saw Russians come close to their second goal as Alexander Samedov's flashy shot that came after a one-two with Kokorin, but the Algerian keeper made an outstanding rescue in front of goal to make Algerians chance alive.

Sporting Lisbon striker Slimani's 60th equalizer came after a goal keeping error by Akinfeev as he could not catch a fluctuating left foot free kick from Brahimi.

However there were some wrangling over the goal as it is reported that a green laser signal was being shown on the face of Russian keeper just before the free kick was taken.

And the goal was a pack up call for Russia who has not qualified for the second round of the world cup since 1986 when it played under Soviet Union.

Algeria almost made it into the second round of 1982 World cup after beating West Germany but the Germans and Austria played out a result which went favorable for both teams.

Algeria to face group G champions Germany on Monday in the round 16 match at Porto Alegre
